Innovation is the Key

| May 20, 2009

Innovation is the pathway to a nation’s progress. It greatly contributes to the economic development of a country and this is clearly shown for most of the developed countries just like the US. And in today’s highly global competition and technological advancement, if a country is just sleeping soundly, there is no way they can achieve the prosperity that every nation is maintaining and aiming for. The US where we can find major innovators such as Microsoft, Intel, and Apple yet should not rest in embracing innovation to maintain its economic growth and aide in solving the crisis that the country is facing right now. In the Philippines however, we just smiled and get frustrated when talking about innovation because the country does not have that. Yes, the country has firms which improve the quality of their products or services and efficiency of their operations. But efficiency has limits too. A firm or a country should not only focus on improving efficiency but instead should also focus on creating new to the world products in order to attain or maintain competitiveness and leadership. New products that could shake the global market because of its competitiveness in terms of price and quality with key ingredients such as continuous improvement, effective marketing strategy, and efficient operations will surely bring a firm or a nation to the progress that everyone is dreaming about. That is why, to foster innovation in a nation, innovation policy is essential. It serves as an instrument to influence technical change or in creating something new.
